After the war, they emigrated to the United States, where his father renamed the family Meschery due to the anti-Communist and anti-Soviet Red Scare under Joseph McCarthy. Tomislav Nikolayevich was renamed Thomas Nicholas, which later became Tom.
Meschery attended Lowell High School in San Francisco, California, and later graduated from Saint Mary's College of California in Moraga in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. During his college years, he helped Saint Mary's reach the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight in 1959 and was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year in 1961.
Meschery was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors as the 7th pick overall in the 1961 NBA draft. He played alongside legend Wilt Chamberlain, to whom he later dedicated a poem. Meschery was the starting forward on the 1961-1962 Warriors team, marking the beginning of his illustrious NBA career.
Throughout his career, Meschery played for the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors and the Seattle SuperSonics. He was known for his versatility on the court, earning him the nickname "The Chermalator" due to his unique combination of charm and athleticism.
Meschery's impressive career was marked by numerous awards and honors. He was selected to the 1963 NBA All-Star Game, becoming the first foreign-born player to achieve this feat. The Warriors also retired his number 14 jersey and incorporated it into the team's logo from 1967 to 1974, a unique honor bestowed upon him.
