A pioneering philanthropist who dedicated his life to improving education and social welfare in Chile, particularly for the underprivileged. He founded several institutions and organizations to support his causes.
Toms Burgos Sotomayor is renowned for founding Villa Lo Burgos, a humble settlement that would eventually become the thriving city of Purranque. This Chilean philanthropist's unwavering dedication to the mutualist movement led to the creation of a thriving community that transformed the lives of countless individuals.
Born on September 18, 1875, in Osorno, Chile, Toms was the son of Bartolo Burgos and Vicenta Sotomayor, descendants of old families that repopulated Osorno in the 18th century. He received his education at the Liceo Alemn de Osorno, a German school that instilled in him the values of discipline and hard work.
In 1891, Toms joined the fledgling mutualist movement in Chile, which aimed to empower workers and provide them with welfare benefits. He co-founded the Sociedad Unin de Artesanos de Osorno, a union that catered to the needs of artisans and laborers. As president of the society, he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of its members.
On April 18, 1911, Toms founded Villa Lo Burgos de Purranquil, a small settlement along the railroad line between Osorno and Puerto Montt. Despite numerous challenges, he persevered, planning and building the town, attracting its first settlers, and establishing its first institutions. Over time, the hamlet grew into the thriving city of Purranque.
Toms married Sofa Rosas Durn, daughter of Felix Rosas Manrique de Lara, and had four children: Victor, Pedro, Francisco, and Pablo. He passed away on August 19, 1945, in Valdivia, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
Toms' contributions to Chilean society extend beyond the city of Purranque. He embodied the spirit of social responsibility, advocating for workers' rights and community development. His life's work serves as a testament to the power of philanthropy and the importance of community engagement.
