Hill was born on June 23, 1956, and began making waves in the sports world as a high school quarterback at Long Beach Polytechnic High School. As a senior at Stanford, Hill suffered an ankle injury that forced him to miss a game against the University of Michigan and limited his playing time in the next two contests. The Dallas Cowboys selected Hill in the third round (62nd overall) of the 1977 NFL draft. Initially, he started as a punt returner and backup wide receiver but quickly rose to become a starting wide receiver, surpassing more experienced players like Golden Richards and Butch Johnson.
