Born on August 29, 1960, MacAlpine started playing piano at the age of five and guitar at twelve. He studied classical piano and violin at the Springfield Conservatory of Music in Massachusetts and later pursued music programs at the University of Hartford in Connecticut. One of his earliest influences was the renowned Polish composer Frédéric Chopin, whose études he would later interpret and pay homage to in his own compositions.
MacAlpine's music career took off in the 1980s, with the release of his debut album Edge of Insanity in 1986, followed by Maximum Security in 1987. These albums cemented his reputation as a shred guitarist, a term used to describe musicians who emphasized speed and technique in their playing. During this period, he also collaborated with other notable guitarists, including Vinnie Moore and Joey Tafolla, on their debut albums.
In addition to his solo work, MacAlpine was part of a heavy metal supergroup named M.A.R.S. (MacAlpine-Aldridge-Rock-Sarzo), which released the album Project Driver in 1986. In the early 1990s, he formed a band called MacAlpine, releasing the album Eyes of the World in 1990. The 1990s saw MacAlpine return to his instrumental roots, releasing a string of albums through the esteemed Shrapnel Records label, including Madness (1993), Premonition (1994), Evolution (1995), and Violent Machine (1996).
