Tony Popovic is renowned for his illustrious career as an Australian association football manager and former player, with a slew of impressive achievements under his belt. Born on July 4, 1973, in Sydney, Australia, to a Croatian family, Popovic grew up in Fairfield, New South Wales. He began his football journey with Sydney United, rising through the youth ranks to make 162 appearances for the first team over seven years. In 1997, he made the move to Japan's J1 League, signing with Sanfrecce Hiroshima, where he scored 13 goals in 94 appearances.
In 2001, Popovic joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer, becoming an integral part of the team's defence and eventually earning the captain's armband. During his time at the club, he played over 120 matches, including 21 Premier League games in his final season.
Popovic's international career was marked by his appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where he played against reigning World Champions Brazil as part of the Australian national team.
After hanging up his boots, Popovic transitioned into coaching, starting with Sydney FC in 2008. A brief stint as assistant manager at Crystal Palace followed, before he was appointed as the inaugural manager of Western Sydney Wanderers in 2012.
