With a distinctive style that blends jazz, classical, and folk elements, Gustavsen has established himself as one of the most innovative and influential pianists of his generation.
Born on October 5, 1970, in Oslo, Norway, Gustavsen grew up in rural Hurdal, Akershus, where he was instilled with a love for music from an early age. He began playing church music, which would later influence his distinctive piano style. Gustavsen pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Oslo and later studying jazz at the Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1993-1996). He then earned a graduate degree in musicology from the University of Oslo, where he also taught jazz piano and theory as a guest teacher (1998-2002).
In 2003, Gustavsen formed his iconic trio with Harald Johnsen on double bass and Jarle Vespestad on drums, releasing three acclaimed albums on ECM Records. These albums, characterized by their pristine, meditative sound, resonated with a wide audience, selling over 100,000 copies. The trio won the prestigious Nattjazz prize in 2005.
In 2009, Gustavsen expanded his ensemble, adding Tore Brunborg on saxophones, Mats Eilertsen on bass, and Vespestad on drums. With vocalist Kristin Asbjørnsen, they recorded the album Restored, Returned, which earned Gustavsen the Spellemannsprisen, Norway's equivalent of the Grammy.
The quartet's subsequent albums, The Well (2012) and Extended Circle (2014), showcased Gustavsen's evolution as a composer, with a more dynamic and edgy sound. His solo performances, collaborations, and session work further cemented his reputation as a master pianist and versatile musician.
