She was educated at The Highlands School, Reading, and Gowerton Comprehensive School, but was eventually expelled, leading her to backpack across Europe at the age of 16.
This journey of self-discovery led her to Piraeus, Greece, where she signed on as a stewardess on a yacht, marking the beginning of her sailing career.
Edwards' determination to compete in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race grew stronger after meeting King Hussein I of Jordan, who encouraged her to participate.
