His father, Mychal Thompson, is a former NBA player, and his older brother, Klay Thompson, is a current NBA player. Trayce attended Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, where he committed to play college baseball for the UCLA Bruins.
The Chicago White Sox selected Thompson in the second round of the 2009 MLB Draft, and he signed instead of enrolling at UCLA. Thompson began his professional career in 2009, playing for the Bristol White Sox and Great Falls Voyagers in the Rookie level. In 2010, he played the whole season for the Kannapolis Intimidators of the Single-A South Atlantic League.
In 2011, Thompson played for the Kannapolis Intimidators, hitting .241 in 519 at-bats and earning a spot on the mid-season SAL All-Star team. In 2012, he moved up through the White Sox farm system, playing for the Winston-Salem Dash of the High-A Carolina League, the Birmingham Barons of the Double-A Southern League, and the Charlotte Knights of the Triple-A International League.
In 2013, Thompson spent the entire season at Double-A Birmingham, hitting .229 in 507 at-bats. He was ranked the White Sox's 2nd prospect before the 2013 season and was added to the White Sox 40-man roster on November 20, 2013.
Thompson made his MLB debut on August 3, 2015, for the Chicago White Sox. He has since played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, and San Diego Padres. In 2023, he played for the Great Britain National Team in the World Baseball Classic.
Thompson has been named to the mid-season SAL All-Star team (2011) and has been ranked the White Sox's 2nd prospect (2013).
