Trevor Storer, a British businessman, is renowned for founding the Pukka Pies company in 1963, transforming the humble pie into a staple of British cuisine. Originally called Trevor Storer's Home Made Pies, the company's humble beginnings in Storer's own home would eventually give rise to a £40 million-a-year empire.
Born on July 11, 1930, in Leicester, England, Storer attended Alderman Newton's School before joining the family bakery business at the age of 16. Following National Service, where he served as an instructor at the British Army's bakery school, Storer rejoined the family firm. In 1960, the company was sold to Allied Bakeries, and Storer was persuaded to become a trainee manager.
In 1963, Storer left Allied Bakeries to pursue his own entrepreneurial venture. By selling his Austin-Healey Sprite, he raised enough capital to start his own company, initially producing pies in his home in Earl Shilton. The first week saw 1,200 steak and kidney pies sold, mainly to local pubs. Encouraged by the initial success, Storer expanded his range to include chicken and mushroom pies, achieving a turnover of £12,000 in the first year.
In 1964, Storer's wife suggested renaming the company to Pukka Pies, a term that represented something top-notch and fashionable at the time. Under Storer's guidance, the company gradually expanded across the UK, eventually establishing a factory in Syston, Leicestershire.
Storer retired in 1995 at the age of 65, but remained chairman of the company. His sons, Tim and Andrew, took over the day-to-day running of the business as joint managing directors. At the time of his death in 2013, the company was turning over £40 million a year, a testament to Storer's pioneering spirit and dedication to quality.
