Troy Sanders is a renowned American musician, best known as the bassist and vocalist of the heavy metal band Mastodon. With his unique style and incredible talent, he has made a significant impact on the music industry, contributing to the success of not one, but three iconic bands.
Sanders' journey into music began when he picked up his older brother's left-handed bass guitar, despite being right-handed. This sparked a passion that led him to convince his dad to buy him a bass guitar just a few months later. He started playing in local bands, including Four Hour Fogger, Knuckle, and Puaka Balava, honing his skills and preparing for the big leagues.
In 1995, Sanders joined forces with Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher, and Brent Hinds to form Mastodon, a band that would go on to achieve mainstream success and critical acclaim. With the departure of original singer Eric Saner, Sanders took on vocal duties, sharing them with Hinds and Dailor. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey, with Mastodon releasing multiple chart-topping albums and touring the world.
In 2012, Sanders joined forces with Greg Puciato (The Dillinger Escape Plan) and Max Cavalera (Soulfly, Sepultura) to form Killer Be Killed, a supergroup that released their self-titled debut album in 2014. In 2016, he co-founded Gone Is Gone, another supergroup featuring Tony Hajjar (At the Drive-In), Mike Zarin, and Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age).
In addition to his work with Mastodon and his supergroups, Sanders has also been the touring bassist for rock legends Thin Lizzy. This has allowed him to stretch his musical muscles and pay homage to one of his biggest influences.
Sanders' music is often characterized by its introspective and philosophical nature. Through his lyrics and interviews, he has shared his perspectives on life, death, and the human experience, inspiring fans and fellow musicians alike.
Troy Sanders' contributions to the music industry have been undeniable. Through his work with Mastodon and his supergroups, he has inspired a new generation of musicians and fans, pushing the boundaries of heavy metal and beyond. His legacy will continue to shape the music landscape for years to come.
