A dominant force in the WWE ring, known for his intense matches and tribal-inspired persona. He was a fan favorite during the mid-2000s wrestling era.
Umaga, born Edward Smith Fatu, was a force to be reckoned with in the world of professional wrestling. Best known for his time with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) under the ring name Umaga, this Samoan wrestler left an indelible mark on the industry.
Umaga was part of the renowned Anoai family, a Samoan wrestling dynasty. His mother, Vera, was the sister of Afa and Sika of The Wild Samoans. He had two older brothers, Sam Fatu (The Tonga Kid) and Solofa Fatu Jr. (Rikishi), who were also professional wrestlers. Additionally, he was the uncle of Jonathan and Joshua Fatu (Jimmy and Jey Uso) and Joseph Fatu (Solo Sikoa), as well as a cousin of several other professional wrestlers, including Rodney Anoai (Yokozuna), Matt Anoai (Rosey), and Joe Anoai (Roman Reigns).
Umaga's professional wrestling journey began in 1995. He started out in various independent circuits before joining World Wrestling Federation (WWF), now known as WWE, in 2001. During his first stint with the company, he was part of the tag team 3-Minute Warning, alongside his cousin Matt Anoai (Rosey). However, he was released from the company in June 2003. Umaga then ventured to All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW), where he became a main eventer under the ring name Jamal. He spent two years in AJPW, honing his skills and building a reputation as a formidable wrestler.
In April 2006, Umaga returned to WWE, this time under the ring name Umaga. He burst onto the scene, dominating the Raw brand and remaining undefeated throughout the year. His first defeat came in January 2007, at the hands of WWE Champion John Cena. However, Umaga bounced back, winning the WWE Intercontinental Championship for the first time in February 2007 and again in July 2007.
Umaga's success in WWE led to appearances in high-profile matches, including the Battle of the Billionaires at WrestleMania 23, where he represented Mr. McMahon. On a personal level, Umaga suffered a blow with the loss of his mother, Vera, in 2008, after a seven-year battle with cancer.
Umaga's contributions to the world of professional wrestling are undeniable. He was a true powerhouse in the ring, known for his intense matches and impressive physique. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of wrestlers, and his impact on the WWE will be remembered for years to come.
Umaga passed away on December 4, 2009, at the age of 36. His death was a shock to the wrestling community, and he is still deeply missed by fans and fellow wrestlers alike. Despite his untimely passing, Umaga's legacy lives on, and his contributions to the world of professional wrestling will always be remembered.
