Born on August 11, 1954, in Charlotte, North Carolina, Heafner was destined for greatness in the world of golf. As the son of professional golfer Clayton Heafner and Mary Ellen Allen, he was exposed to the game from a young age. Heafner's family moved to Cary, North Carolina, where he attended Cary Elementary School and Cary High School. He then went on to attend North Carolina State University, where he became a three-time All-American member of the golf team.
Heafner turned professional in 1978 and went on to play in 266 events on the PGA Tour from 1978 to 1988. During this period, he made the cut 157 times and notched 20 top-10 finishes. His most notable achievement on the PGA Tour was his win at the 1981 Walt Disney World National Team Championship, where he partnered with Mike Holland to secure the title.
In the latter stages of his career, Heafner played on the Nationwide Tour, where his best finish was a T14 at the 1994 NIKE Carolina Classic. After reaching the age of 50 in 2004, he began to play on the Champions Tour in selected events, with his best finish being a T34 at the 2006 SAS Championship.
Throughout his illustrious career, Heafner received numerous accolades for his achievements. He was a member of the 1977 Walker Cup team, which he helped lead to victory by winning all three of his matches.
