A defensive end who played in the NFL from 2008 to 2012, known for being one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.
Vernon Gholston is a former American professional football player who was a defensive end and linebacker in the National Football League (NFL). He is best known for being a highly touted prospect out of Ohio State University, where he set multiple records, including the single-season sack record with 14 sacks in 2007.
Gholston was born on June 5, 1986, and attended Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Michigan. As a senior, he emerged as one of the top prospects in the Midwest, registering 75 tackles, including six sacks, as a linebacker and earning an All-State selection as an offensive guard.
Gholston attended Ohio State University, where he redshirted in 2005 due to a broken left hand. In his freshman season, he played defensive end, although he was recruited as a linebacker. He eventually moved up to the number 2 spot behind Mike Kudla. In 2006, he earned Second-team All-Big Ten honors from both the league's coaches and the media while starting 13 games.
In 2007, Gholston had a breakout season, recording 37 tackles, 15.5 for a loss, and setting a school record with 14 sacks in 13 games. He was named All-American by Pro Football Weekly and was First-team All-Big Ten. During his tenure at Ohio State, Gholston started 25 games, finishing with 87 tackles, 47 solo, and 30.5 stops for a loss.
The New York Jets selected Gholston sixth overall in the 2008 NFL draft. He played for the Jets from 2008 to 2010, before joining the Chicago Bears in 2011 and the St. Louis Rams in 2012. Gholston's NFL career was marked by unfulfilled promise, as he struggled to replicate his college success in the pros.
Despite his underwhelming NFL career, Gholston's college achievements continue to earn him recognition as one of the greatest defensive ends in Ohio State history. His impressive combine performance and draft hype in 2008 remain one of the most memorable moments in NFL draft history.
Gholston's post-football life has been relatively quiet, with no public appearances or media mentions. His legacy serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of translating college success to the NFL and the fleeting nature of athletic fame.
