Vernon Charles Kay was born on April 28, 1974, in Horwich, Lancashire, to Norman and Gladys Kay. He grew up with his younger brother, Stephen, and attended St Joseph's RC High School in Horwich. Kay then spent two years at St John Rigby College before graduating in environmental science at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Kay's entry into the entertainment industry began with modelling, which he was introduced to while working in a DIY shop. He was scouted by a modelling agency at the BBC Clothes Show Live, and soon found himself walking the catwalk.
