Lead vocalist and guitarist of the Bangles, known for hits like "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Manic Monday".
As the lead guitarist and songwriter of the Bangles, Vicki Peterson has been a driving force behind the band's signature sound and critically acclaimed hits. Since the band's formation in 1981, Peterson has been instrumental in shaping their unique blend of pop, rock, and folk, earning her a reputation as one of the most talented and influential female musicians of her generation.
Born on January 11, 1958, in Los Angeles, California, Vicki Peterson grew up in a musical family and began playing the guitar at a young age. She formed her first band, Crista Galli, in high school, and later went on to play with various bands, including Aishi, the Muze, the Fans, and Those Girls, before forming the Bangles with her sister Debbi Peterson and Susanna Hoffs.
With the Bangles, Peterson wrote and co-wrote many of the band's hit songs, including "Going Down to Liverpool," "In Your Room," and "Everything I Wanted." The band's 1986 album, Different Light, spawned the hit singles "Walk Like an Egyptian" and "Manic Monday," cementing their status as one of the most popular rock bands of the 1980s.
After the Bangles disbanded in 1989, Peterson went on to collaborate with other artists, including Steve Wynn, Giant Sand, and Tom Petty. She also formed the Continental Drifters and the Psycho Sisters with Susan Cowsill, releasing an album with the latter in 2014.
Peterson has been recognized for her contributions to music with several awards and nominations, including a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for the Bangles' hit single "Walk Like an Egyptian."
Peterson has been married to musician John Cowsill since 2003, and has no children. She has also experienced personal tragedy, including the loss of her fiancé Bobby Donati to leukemia in 1991.
Vicki Peterson's innovative guitar playing and songwriting have inspired countless female musicians and bands, including The Breeders, Veruca Salt, and Belly. Her influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary rock and pop artists, solidifying her place as a rock legend and trailblazer.
Today, Peterson continues to tour and record with the Bangles, releasing new music and entertaining audiences around the world with her unique blend of rock, pop, and folk.
