Vijender's elder brother, Manoj, a former boxer himself, inspired him to take up the sport, and later supported him financially to pursue his boxing career.
In June 2015, Vijender Singh turned professional, signing a multi-year agreement with Queensberry Promotions through IOS Sports and Entertainment. This decision ruled him out of the 2016 Olympics, which would have been his fourth Olympic appearance.
