Becker was born on February 20, 1950, in Queens, New York City. Raised by his father and grandmother after his parents' separation, he developed an early interest in music, switching from saxophone to guitar and receiving instruction from neighbor Randy California, later of the band Spirit.
Becker met Donald Fagen at Bard College, where they formed the nucleus of Steely Dan. The band's debut album, Can't Buy a Thrill, released in 1972, marked the beginning of a critically and commercially successful ten-year career.
