Screenwriter and producer behind iconic films like "Batman" (1989) and "Top Gun" (1986), crafting memorable characters and stories that captivated audiences worldwide.
Warren Skaaren was an American screenwriter and film producer who left an indelible mark on the film industry. He is best known for his work on blockbuster hits like Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop II, and Beetlejuice, cementing his position as one of the most sought-after writers in Hollywood.
Skaaren's journey in the film industry began in 1970 when he was appointed as the executive director of the Texas Film Commission. He quickly made a name for himself by bringing in big projects, including the film The Getaway, which was shot in Texas. This success led to the formation of FPS Inc., a television and film production services company in Dallas, which handled location shooting for the popular TV series Dallas and worked on the film Tender Mercies.
One of Skaaren's most significant contributions was his role in the distribution of the cult classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. He claimed credit for crafting the film's title, which helped to make it a huge success. This achievement enabled Skaaren to leave the Film Commission and pursue a full-time career in the film industry.
In 1983, Skaaren was approached by a Texas businessman to write a script about the Gurkhas, Nepalese soldiers serving in the British Army. He spent a year writing the spec script titled Of East and West, which although never filmed, gained him an agent and attracted the attention of then-Paramount Pictures executive Dawn Steel. This led to Skaaren being hired to rewrite the screenplay of Fire with Fire, followed by Top Gun, for which he was credited as an associate producer.
Skaaren's revisions to the Top Gun script, including changing Kelly McGillis's character from a gymnast to a military instructor, were instrumental in the film's success. He then went on to revise Larry Ferguson's script for Beverly Hills Cop II, earning joint screenplay credit. Although Ferguson appealed to have sole credit, Skaaren's credit was retained when a California appeals court upheld the Writers Guild of America's writing credits.
Skaaren's most notable collaboration was with Michael McDowell on the script for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. The film's success was a testament to Skaaren's ability to craft engaging stories that resonated with audiences. His work on these films showcased his versatility as a writer, from action-packed blockbusters to quirky comedies.
Warren Skaaren's contribution to the film industry extends beyond his impressive list of credits. He was a master of his craft, known for his ability to take a script and elevate it to new heights. His legacy continues to inspire writers and filmmakers today, and his work remains a staple of 80s and 90s pop culture.
Skaaren was born on March 9, 1946, and passed away on December 28, 1990. During his lifetime, he achieved numerous milestones, including forming FPS Inc. and working on some of Hollywood's biggest hits. His impact on the film industry will be remembered for generations to come.
