Wayne Smith, born Ian Flemming Smith, was a Jamaican reggae and dancehall musician revered for his groundbreaking hit "Under Me Sleng Teng" in 1985, which marked the inception of the digital era in reggae music.
Smith's musical journey began at the tender age of 14, when he started recording with producer Prince Jammy, his next-door neighbor, in 1980. This collaboration led to the release of his debut album "Youthman Skanking" in 1982, followed by "Smoker Super" in 1985.
Smith's 1985 recording of "Under Mi Sleng Teng" revolutionized the reggae scene, introducing the world to the ragga style. The rhythm, programmed into the Casio MT40 by Okuda Hiroko, was inspired by Barrington Levy's "Under Mi Sensi". This innovative fusion of electronic beats and traditional reggae soul catapulted Smith to fame.
Smith's subsequent hits, such as "Come Along" featuring the Stalag riddim and "Ain't No Meaning in Saying Goodbye", solidified his position as a reggae trailblazer. He went on to establish his own record label, Sleng Teng Records, in New York, collaborating with producers from around the world, including Heartical Sound and Evidence Music.
In 2011, Smith embarked on his first European tour with Little Lion Sound from Switzerland. He later returned to Jamaica in 2013, settling in Mandeville with his fiancée and youngest daughter, Arella. Despite his passing on February 17, 2014, at the age of 48, Smith's legacy continues to inspire generations of reggae enthusiasts.
