William Motzing, an American-born composer, conductor, arranger, and trombonist, left an indelible mark on the Australian music scene. Born on August 19, 1937, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Motzing's musical journey began at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He earned his Bachelor's degree in 1959 and went on to pursue his Master's degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, which he completed in 1960.
During his time at Eastman, Motzing played trombone in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and studied alongside notable musicians Ron Carter and Chuck Mangione. He married Bette Anne Loder in 1960 and became the youngest member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, marking the beginning of his illustrious career.
In 1971, Motzing toured Australia with the jazz-rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears as their sound designer. This exposure sparked a desire to relocate, and on January 25, 1972, he made Australia his new home. He took up positions as a lecturer in the jazz program at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music, now the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, and later at the Australian Film and Television School.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Motzing's arrangements and conducting skills catapulted many Australian chart-topping hits to success. His work on strings and horns for artists like Peter Allen, including the iconic "I Still Call Australia Home," remains an integral part of Australian music history.
