William Peter Blatty is best known for his chilling 1971 novel, The Exorcist, and its subsequent film adaptation, for which he won an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1974. Blatty was born on January 7, 1928, in New York City, the youngest of five children. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Georgetown University in 1950 and his master's degree in English literature from George Washington University in 1954.
Following the completion of his master's degree, Blatty joined the United States Air Force, where he served in the Psychological Warfare Division and attained the rank of first lieutenant. After his service, he worked for the United States Information Agency in Beirut.
Blatty's writing career took off with the publication of The Exorcist, which became a massive commercial success. He went on to rework his 1966 novel, Twinkle, Twinkle, Killer Kane, into a new novel titled The Ninth Configuration, published in 1978. He adapted the novel into a film of the same name, The Ninth Configuration (1980), which marked his directorial debut.
Blatty's work on The Exorcist earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Drama. The Ninth Configuration won Best Screenplay at the 38th Golden Globe Awards and was nominated for Best Picture.
