William Rockhill Nelson, a pioneering figure in American journalism, is best known for co-founding The Kansas City Star, a newspaper that would go on to become a staple of Midwestern journalism. Nelson's legacy extends far beyond the newsroom, however, as he was also a generous philanthropist who bequeathed his estate to the city, paving the way for the establishment of the renowned Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
Born on March 7, 1841, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Nelson was the son of Isaac De Groff Nelson, a publisher and nursery owner, and Elizabeth Rockhill, a member of a prominent local family. This entrepreneurial spirit would stay with Nelson throughout his life, driving him to pursue a variety of ventures.
In his early 20s, Nelson attempted to run a store in Savannah, Georgia, an endeavor that ultimately ended in failure. This brief sojourn in the South, however, earned him the nickname "The Colonel," a moniker that would stick with him for the rest of his life. As William Allen White, a journalist and friend, later jokingly noted, "Not that he was ever a colonel of anything... He was just coloneliferous."
In 1880, Nelson and his partner, Samuel Morss, moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where they founded The Kansas City Star. At the time, the city was already home to three daily newspapers, but Nelson's business acumen and commitment to quality journalism propelled the Star to the top. Within months, Nelson took over sole ownership of the paper, which would go on to become a beacon of journalism in the Midwest.
In 1909, Nelson donated his estate, Oakdale, to the city of Kansas City, specifying that it be used for the establishment of an art museum. Today, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art stands as a testament to his generosity and commitment to the cultural enrichment of his community.
