His parents divorced in 1923, and his mother later married Morrison Boal Orr, heir to the Orr Felt Blanket Company fortune. This union led to Orr adopting his stepfather's surname.

Orr's educational background includes attending the Coburn School in Miami, Rumsey Hall School, and Phillips Exeter Academy, where he was elected as a member of the Christian Fraternity Cabinet in 1934. He later moved to Los Angeles with his mother and half-sister, where he worked as a model, studied acting under Ben Bard, and performed in various plays.

Acting Career

Orr's acting career began in the late 1930s, with appearances in films such as The Mortal Storm, The Gay Sisters, and The Big Street. He imitated celebrities in Ben Bard's revue, Hit Parade, and acted in George and Margaret at the Little Theatre for Professionals of Beverly Hills. Warner Bros. signed Orr to a $300-per-week contract, although he appeared in more films for other studios when he was loaned out.

During World War II, Orr served as an officer in the Army Air Force. After the war, he continued to act in various films and television shows, eventually transitioning to producing and creating his own television programs.

Television Producer and Legacy

Orr's most notable contributions came as a television producer, particularly in the Western and detective genres. He produced and created several iconic shows, including Cheyenne, Maverick, and 77 Sunset Strip, which became staples of American television in the 1950s and 1960s.
