Born on April 18, 1970, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Roaf was the son of a dentist and a trailblazing mother who was the first black woman to serve on the Arkansas Supreme Court. Despite being lightly recruited out of high school, Roaf earned an athletic scholarship to Louisiana Tech University, where he had an outstanding career as a Bulldog from 1989 to 1992.
The New Orleans Saints selected Roaf with the eighth pick of the first round in the 1993 NFL draft, and he went on to play nine seasons for the franchise. During his time with the Saints, Roaf was named to seven Pro Bowls and earned a spot on both the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team and the 2000s All-Decade Team.
