A pioneering basketball player who excelled in the American Basketball Association (ABA) and later in the NBA, known for his athleticism and defensive skills.
Willie Wise, born on March 3, 1947, is an American former professional basketball player renowned for his exceptional all-around skills, earning him a spot on the American Basketball Association's (ABA) All-Time Team.
Wise's NBA career was cut short due to a knee injury, but not before he left an indelible mark on the ABA. As a 6'6" forward from Drake University, he played for the Los Angeles and later Utah Stars, helping the team win the 1971 ABA Championship.
Sports Illustrated aptly described him as "the best two-way performer in pro basketball," recognizing his proficiency in scoring (19.2 points per game during his ABA career) and defense.
Following the ABA-NBA merger in 1976, Wise played one full season and part of a second in the NBA as a member of the Denver Nuggets and Seattle SuperSonics. Unfortunately, a career-ending knee injury led to his waiver from the SuperSonics in November 1977.
In 2009, Drake University retired Wise's #42 jersey, a testament to his enduring legacy. However, he remains one of the former ABA players fighting for fair treatment from their pension fund.
"We practically pioneered the Golden State Warriors. The way they play is the way we played in the 60s and 70s, and the NBA's adoption of the 3-point line..." - Willie Wise
Wise's influence on modern basketball is undeniable, with the NBA adopting a more free-flowing style reminiscent of the ABA. His pride in the ABA's pioneering spirit serves as a reminder of the league's significant contributions to the sport.
Though his career was cut short, Willie Wise's achievements and contributions to basketball ensure his place as one of the sport's unsung heroes.
