A catcher in Major League Baseball, known for being the first Brazilian-born player to appear in a World Series, and for his impressive defensive skills.
Yan Gomes, a Brazilian-American professional baseball catcher, is renowned for becoming the first Brazilian-born player in Major League Baseball (MLB) history, making his debut in 2012 with the Toronto Blue Jays. Throughout his career, he has played for several notable teams, including the Cleveland Indians, Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, and Chicago Cubs.
Gomes was born on July 19, 1987, in Mogi das Cruzes, Brazil, to Claudia and Dcio Gomes. His family moved to the United States when he was 12 years old, and he was introduced to baseball by a Cuban coach his father met in So Paulo.
Gomes attended Miami Southridge High School in Miami, Florida, where he excelled in baseball. He then enrolled at the University of Tennessee, playing college baseball for the Tennessee Volunteers in the Southeastern Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I. During his time at Tennessee, he started at every infield position except shortstop and was named an NCAA Division I Freshman All-American after his first season.
Gomes also spent two summers playing collegiate summer baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League, first with the Cotuit Kettleers in 2007 and then with the Chatham As in 2008. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB Draft but did not sign. Instead, he transferred to Barry University, where he continued his collegiate career.
The Toronto Blue Jays selected Gomes in the tenth round of the 2009 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut on May 17, 2012, with the Blue Jays, becoming an instant sensation as the first Brazilian-born player in MLB history. He played for the Blue Jays in 2012 and the Indians from 2013 to 2018, before being traded to the Washington Nationals ahead of the 2019 season.
Gomes played a crucial role in the Nationals' World Series championship in 2019, helping the team defeat the Houston Astros in Game 7. He became the first Brazilian-born player to win a World Series title.
Gomes is known for his charitable work, particularly in his native Brazil. He has been involved in various initiatives to promote baseball and provide opportunities for young players in Brazil.
Gomes is married to his wife, Tennessee, and they have two daughters together. He is also fluent in three languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and English.
Yan Gomes' remarkable career has paved the way for Brazilian baseball players, inspiring a new generation of athletes to pursue their dreams in the sport. His achievements on and off the field have cemented his place as a trailblazer in baseball history.
