Russian weightlifter who won three Olympic medals, including two golds, and set multiple world records in the 1970s and 1980s. He is considered one of the greatest weightlifters of all time.
Yevgeny Gavrilovich Minayev, a Russian weightlifter, is renowned for his phenomenal strength, unwavering determination, and unorthodox approach to the sport. With a silver medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics and a gold medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics, Minayev left an indelible mark on the world of weightlifting.
Minayev's journey in weightlifting began while serving in the Soviet Army. He broke the world record in the press at his first competition, the 1956 Soviet Championships, and went on to set 13 world records throughout his career, including nine in the press, one in the snatch, and three in the total.
He won seven national titles between 1957 and 1966, and was crowned European champion in 1958, 1960, and 1962. Minayev's most notable victory was at the 1960 Olympics, where he defeated Isaac Berger in a grueling 9-hour battle.
Minayev was known for his insubordination and refusal to conform to traditional coaching methods. He often missed training sessions with the national team, preferring to train on his own terms. This nonconformist attitude led to his expulsion from the national team in the mid-1960s, despite being a national champion.
After retiring from weightlifting in 1966, Minayev worked briefly as a coach before returning to his native Klin. He struggled to find steady employment, taking on temporary jobs at farms and mechanical workshops. Tragically, Minayev spent his final years homeless on the streets of Klin, where he froze to death in December 1993.
Yevgeny Minayev's unorthodox approach to weightlifting and his remarkable achievements have inspired generations of athletes. His legacy extends beyond his impressive medal count, as he remains an iconic figure in the world of weightlifting, symbolizing determination, strength, and a rebellious spirit.
