Yves-François Blanchet is a Canadian politician who has made a name for himself as the leader of the Bloc Québécois, a Quebec-based separatist party, since 2019. As the Member of Parliament for Beloeil-Chambly, Blanchet has been a vocal advocate for Quebec's interests and a strong voice in Canadian politics.
Blanchet was born on April 16, 1965, in Drummondville, Quebec, to Pierrette Bdard and Raymond Blanchet. He graduated from the Université de Montréal with a degree in history and anthropology in 1987. Before entering politics, Blanchet worked as a teacher and was the founder of an artist, disc, and concert management firm, YFB Inc.
During his time as the president of the ADISQ from 2003 to 2006, Blanchet was recognized as the local business personality of the year by the Drummondville Chamber of Commerce. He also received 10 Flix Awards for his work with associated artists.
In the 2008 provincial election, Blanchet was elected to represent the riding of Drummond in the National Assembly of Quebec. He was reelected in the 2012 election, this time in the Johnson electoral district.
As a member of the Parti Québécois (PQ), Blanchet served as the Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife, and Parks from 2012 to 2014 under Premier Pauline Marois. During his tenure, he was a strong advocate for environmental protection and sustainable development in Quebec.
In 2014, Blanchet was defeated by Coalition Avenir Québec candidate André Lamontagne in the Quebec election. However, he didn't let this setback deter him. Instead, he went on to become a columnist with Le Nouvelliste and later emerged as the leader of the Bloc Québécois in 2019.
As the leader of the Bloc Québécois, Blanchet has been a vocal advocate for Quebec's interests and autonomy. He has been critical of the Canadian government's treatment of Quebec and has called for greater recognition of Quebec's distinct identity.
Blanchet has also been a strong voice on environmental issues, advocating for climate action and sustainable development in Quebec and across Canada.
Blanchet's unwavering commitment to Quebec's autonomy and his advocacy for environmental issues have made him a significant figure in Canadian politics. As the leader of the Bloc Québécois, he continues to shape the political landscape in Quebec and beyond.
