A renowned Croatian basketball player and coach, known for his impressive playing career and successful coaching stints in European leagues. He led the Croatian national team to several international medals.
Žan Tabak is a name synonymous with Croatian basketball, a country that has produced some of the greatest players in the sport. Born on June 15, 1970, in Split, SR Croatia, SFR Yugoslavia, Tabak's basketball career spanned over two decades, marked by numerous achievements and milestones, despite being plagued by injuries.
Tabak's love affair with basketball began at a young age, thanks to his family's involvement in the sport. His father-in-law, Ratomir Tvrdi, was a top European basketball player, while his wife played first-division basketball for Croatia, and his younger brother played professionally in Croatia.
Tabak started his basketball journey in 1985, making his debut with the Jugoplastika Split organization at just 15 years old. Alongside his teammates Dino Raja and Toni Kuko, Tabak led the club to three consecutive European Championships from 1989 to 1991, a feat only equaled in EuroLeague history by Riga ASK some thirty years prior.
Tabak's professional career took off when he was selected by the Houston Rockets with the 24th pick in the second round (51st overall) of the 1991 NBA draft. However, he opted to spend another year in Croatia with SD Split before joining the Rockets in 1992.
During his NBA stint, Tabak played for the Rockets, Toronto Raptors, and Boston Celtics, averaging 5.0 points in his six-year NBA career. Despite his relatively short time in the league, Tabak achieved a unique feat – becoming the first international player to play in the NBA Finals for two teams (Rockets in 1994 and Raptors in 1995).
In 1999, Tabak returned to Europe, playing for several clubs in Croatia, Spain, and Greece. After retiring from professional basketball in 2005, Tabak transitioned into coaching, taking charge of the Croatian national team's youth squads.
In 2011, Tabak became the head coach of the Polish club Trefl Sopot, a position he still holds today. Under his guidance, the team has won several titles, including the Polish Basketball League championship in 2012.
Žan Tabak's contributions to Croatian basketball are undeniable. As a player, he inspired a generation of young Croatians to take up the sport. As a coach, he has nurtured and developed talent, shaping the future of Polish basketball.
Tabak's dedication, perseverance, and passion for the game have earned him a special place in the hearts of basketball enthusiasts worldwide. Today, he continues to leave his mark on the sport, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps.
Despite the ups and downs in his career, Žan Tabak remains an icon in Croatian basketball, a testament to the power of hard work, determination, and a love for the game.
