Legendary hockey player and captain of the Edmonton Oilers, leading the team to five Stanley Cup championships and earning numerous records and accolades.
Ric Messier, a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenseman, is best known for his eight-season stint in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Colorado Avalanche and Florida Panthers. His remarkable career, marked by grit and determination, earned him a coveted Stanley Cup win in 2001.
Messier was born on October 29, 1973, and began his hockey journey as a youth, participating in the 1985 and 1986 Quebec International PeeWee Hockey Tournaments with a minor ice hockey team from Drummondville. He later played in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League for the Trois-Rivières Draveurs and Sherbrooke Faucons.
In 1995, Messier signed with the Colorado Avalanche as a free agent and was assigned to the American Hockey League's (AHL) Cornwall Aces for one season. After the Aces folded, he moved to the Hershey Bears, where he won the Calder Cup in 1997. Messier's impressive performance led to his NHL debut that same season, playing 21 games for the Avalanche.
Tragically, Messier's NHL career was cut short due to a career-ending wrist injury suffered in a November 21, 2003 game. Despite this setback, he left an indelible mark on the NHL, boasting an impressive career statistics profile.
In addition to his on-ice accomplishments, Messier's personal milestones include being part of a storied hockey family, with his cousin, Mark Messier, a legendary center who played for the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers.
Despite the untimely end to his NHL career, Ric Messier's tenacity and dedication to the sport have earned him a revered place in the hockey world. His remarkable journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring hockey players and fans alike.
