On a fateful Monday afternoon, 26 German bombers, escorted by fighter planes, swooped down upon the unsuspecting civilians, unleashing a torrent of incendiary and high-explosive bombs. The resulting inferno engulfed the town, reducing buildings to rubble, and slaughtering men, women, and children alike. The brutal airstrike, orchestrated by the German Luftwaffe in support of the Spanish Nationalists, left a scar that would haunt the world for generations to come.
In a bold move, Italy secretly put its cards on the table, inking the Treaty of London, which bound the nation to join the Allied Powers – Britain, France, and Russia – in their fight against the Central Powers. This sly maneuver marked a pivotal shift in the war's balance of power, as Italy's military might and strategic Mediterranean coastline tipped the scales in favor of the Allies.
In the heart of Soviet Central Asia, the city of Tashkent was thriving, but on that fateful day, disaster struck as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake ripped through the city, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake. The earthquake's maximum MSK intensity of VII (Very strong) reduced much of the city to rubble, claiming 15,000 to 200,000 lives in its devastating aftermath.
Tragedy struck the Benxihu Colliery in Manchukuo, a region of northeastern China, when a devastating accident occurred, resulting in the loss of 1,549 Chinese miners' lives. The blast, which happened during a coal-dust explosion, was one of the deadliest industrial disasters in history. The miners, mostly poor laborers from rural China, were working deep underground when the explosion ripped through the tunnels, leaving behind a trail of destruction and grief for the families of the victims.
