Events from History on April 7:
In the chaotic streets of Kigali, Rwanda, a sinister plot unfolded, marking the beginning of one of humanity's darkest chapters. Prime Minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana, a civilian leader, fell victim to the brutal hands of soldiers, sparking a wave of terror that would engulf the nation. The Tutsi population, already living in fear, became the primary target of the orchestrated massacre. Bloody violence erupted, claiming countless lives, and the international community stood idly by, paralyzed by inaction.
In a stunning turn of events, US troops, led by General Tommy Franks, stormed into Baghdad, marking a major milestone in the Iraq War. As the city fell, Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist regime began to crumble, with the dictator himself disappearing into hiding. The rapid advance of coalition forces caught the Iraqi military off guard, and the capital city was quickly overrun. Two days later, the regime officially collapsed, marking the end of Hussein's 24-year grip on power. The fall of Baghdad sent shockwaves around the world, marking a significant shift in the balance of power in the Middle East.

Union victory at Battle of Shiloh (Shiloh, Tennessee, USA) 1862
The Confederate Army of Mississippi, led by General Albert Sidney Johnston, launched a surprise attack on the Union Army of the Tennessee, led by General Ulysses S. Grant, near Shiloh, Tennessee. But Grant's troops held their ground, and the arrival of the Army of the Ohio, led by General Don Carlos Buell, turned the tide of the battle. After two days of brutal fighting, the Confederates retreated, leaving behind over 10,000 casualties. The Union victory came at a great cost, with over 13,000 casualties, but it marked a crucial turning point in the war, giving the Union control of the Mississippi River and paving the way for the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy.
The Nazi regime's stranglehold on Germany tightened as Hitler's cabinet, led by Reich Minister of the Interior Wilhelm Frick, issued the Law for the Restoration of the Professional Civil Service, effectively purging Jews and political dissenters from civil service positions. This draconian law marked a devastating turning point in the persecution of Germany's Jewish population and paved the way for far greater atrocities. With this law, the Nazis surreptitiously infiltrated every level of government, solidifying their totalitarian grip on the nation.
President Richard Nixon took a decisive step towards ending the Vietnam War by announcing his plan to accelerate Vietnamization, a policy aimed at gradually transferring military responsibilities to South Vietnam. This move signified a major shift in the US's strategy, marking a significant turning point in the war. By doing so, Nixon aimed to reduce American involvement and pave the way for a peaceful withdrawal. The stakes were high, and the world watched as Nixon's bold decision raised hopes for a swift resolution to the long-drawn-out conflict.

The Iran hostage crisis had been simmering for months, with 52 American diplomats and citizens held captive in Tehran. In a bold move, the United States decided to take a drastic step, severing diplomatic relations with Iran. This historic decision marked a turning point in the crisis, as the US government showed it wouldn't back down in the face of Iranian aggression. The move sent a strong message to the Iranian government, making it clear that the US wouldn't tolerate the hostage situation any longer.
