British General Wolfe defeats French General Montcalm in Quebec (Quebec City, Quebec, Canada) 1759

French and British forces clashed on the Plains of Abraham, just outside the walls of Quebec City. French General Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, defensive genius that he was, had fortified the city, but British General James Wolfe, cunning and bold, outmaneuvered him. As the British troops emerged from the early morning fog, Montcalm's defenses were breached, and a fierce battle ensued. Montcalm fell mortally wounded, and the French army retreated in disarray. With Quebec City on the brink of collapse, French Governor Pierre de Vaudreuil signed the Articles of Capitulation, surrendering the city to the British.
