Communist East Germany is formed with Soviet backing
The defeated Germany's eastern zone was about to rise from the ashes as the Communist German Democratic Republic, or East Germany, a Soviet-backed state that would become a crucial chess piece in the Cold War. The newly formed government, led by Wilhelm Pieck, Otto Grotewohl, and Wilhelm Zaisser, was tasked with turning the war-torn region into a socialist paradise. The Soviet Union's influence was evident, with the Communist Party of Germany holding significant sway over the new government. As the Iron Curtain descended, East Germany would become a symbol of Soviet power and a thorn in the side of the Western world.
