A. J. Ellis, born Andrew James Ellis on April 9, 1981, is a former American professional baseball catcher who made a name for himself in the Major League Baseball (MLB) scene. With a career spanning over 11 seasons, Ellis played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, Miami Marlins, and San Diego Padres before retiring in 2018.
Ellis attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Lexington, Kentucky, where he was a baseball and basketball letterman. He was also a sports news anchor for the school's TV production. Ellis graduated in 1999 and went on to earn All-Ohio Valley Conference first-team honors all four seasons while attending Austin Peay University.
During his time at Austin Peay University, Ellis finished with a .351 batting average and ranks as the university's all-time leader with 263 hits. His impressive college career earned him a spot in the 18th round of the 2003 MLB Draft, where he was selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Ellis spent several years in the minor leagues, playing for the South Georgia Waves, Vero Beach Dodgers, Double-A Jacksonville Suns, and Triple-A Las Vegas 51s. On September 5, 2008, his contract was purchased by the Dodgers, and he made his MLB debut on September 15, 2008.
Ellis made his first appearance in a major league game when he pinch-ran for Nomar Garciaparra in the 9th inning against the San Francisco Giants. He then scored his first major league run when he was part of a two-run home run by the Dodgers' primary catcher Russell Martin.
In 2014, Ellis was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies, where he played for two seasons before being traded to the Miami Marlins in 2016.
Ellis played for the Miami Marlins for one season before becoming a free agent in 2017.
In 2018, Ellis signed with the San Diego Padres, where he finished his MLB career before retiring at the end of the season.
After retiring from baseball, Ellis became a Special Assistant to the General Manager in the front office of the San Diego Padres. He continues to be involved in the MLB community, using his experience and knowledge to contribute to the Padres' success.
