Kstner was born on September 27, 1719, to a law professor father, Abraham Kstner. He studied law, philosophy, physics, mathematics, and metaphysics at the University of Leipzig, where he earned his habilitation in 1739. He later became an associate professor of mathematics, philosophy, logic, and law at the same university.
Kstner's most notable achievement is his collection of poems, which were first published without his consent in 1781. These poems are celebrated for their biting humor and sharp irony, often targeting contemporary personalities. The poems were later published in Vermischten Schriften 1 und 2 Altenburg in 1783, and further poems were published in subsequent years.
In addition to his literary pursuits, Kstner was an accomplished mathematician. He was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1751 and became a full professor of natural philosophy and geometry at the University of Gttingen in 1756. He succeeded Tobias Mayer as the director of the observatory in 1763.
Kstner's academic legacy is marked by his influential students, including Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Johann Christian Polycarp Erxleben, Johann Pfaff (doctoral advisor of Carl Friedrich Gauss), Johann Tobias Mayer, Heinrich Wilhelm Brandes, Farkas Bolyai (father of Jnos Bolyai), and Georg Klgel.
Kstner married Anna Rosina Baumann in 1757 after a 12-year engagement. Tragically, she died less than a year later due to lung disease. He later had a daughter, Catharine, with his cleaning lady.
Kstner passed away on June 20, 1800, in Gttingen, leaving behind a rich legacy of literary and scientific achievements.
