Early Life and Education

Born in Amsterdam on December 7, 1792, Van der Aa's early life was marked by a thirst for knowledge. Between the ages of 6 and 12, he attended the day school in Amstelveen, later moving to the boarding school of J.E. van Iterson in Aarlanderveen. After a brief stint at the Latin school in Leiden, he was sent to the Seminarium in Lingen, Germany, to study the dead languages.

A Foray into Various Pursuits

Upon his return to the Netherlands in 1810, Van der Aa embarked on a journey that would take him through various professions. He enrolled in medical school in Leiden but was forced to abandon his studies after his father's untimely death. He then fulfilled his mandatory military service until 1817, after which he attempted to open a bookshop in Leuven. Although this venture was unsuccessful, he went on to become a teacher of the Dutch language.

It was in 1839 that Van der Aa's literary career truly took off. He moved to Gorinchem, where he penned several reference works, including a gazetteer and a biographical dictionary. His magnum opus, the Aardrijkskundig Woordenboek der Nederlanden (Geographical dictionary of the Netherlands), is a 14-volume masterpiece that took him 12 years to complete. This monumental work, published between 1839 and 1851, was a collaborative effort that drew upon the expertise of numerous regional historians and geographers.
