Adrienne Corri is best known for her iconic portrayal of Mary Alexander, the wife of Frank Alexander, in Stanley Kubrick's dystopian masterpiece, A Clockwork Orange (1971). Born Adrienne Riccoboni on November 13, 1931, in Glasgow, Scotland, Corri was the daughter of an English mother, Olive Smethurst, and an Italian father, Luigi Riccoboni. She spent her early years in the 1930s at the Crown Hotel in Callander, Stirling, where her father, also known as Louis, worked as the hotel manager.
Corri's film debut came in 1949 with The Romantic Age, followed by Jean Renoir's version of The River in 1951. Her notable film roles include Lara's mother in David Lean's Dr. Zhivago (1965) and Dorothy in Otto Preminger's thriller Bunny Lake Is Missing (1965). She also appeared in a range of horror and suspense films, such as Devil Girl from Mars (1954), The Tell-Tale Heart (1960), A Study in Terror (1965), and Vampire Circus (1972).
Corri's most memorable role, Mary Alexander, was a last-minute addition to the cast of A Clockwork Orange. Originally, two actresses had withdrawn from the production, one citing the humiliation of being perched naked on Warren Clarke's shoulders for extended periods. Corri, however, was unfazed, joking to co-star Malcolm McDowell, "Well, Malcolm, you're about to find out that I'm a real redhead." Her willingness to undergo the grueling process of shooting endless takes earned Kubrick's respect.
In an interview, Corri recalled, "For four days, I was bashed about by Malcolm [Alex] and he really hit me. One scene was shot 39 times until Malcolm said, 'I can't hit her any more.'" This experience showcased Corri's professionalism and ability to endure the demands of Kubrick's meticulous direction.
Corri continued to work in film and television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in productions such as Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) and various British TV series. Although her screen presence waned in the following decades, her iconic role in A Clockwork Orange remains an indelible mark on her legacy as a daring and dedicated actress.
Corri married actor Daniel Massey in 1961, and the couple had one son, Alexander Massey. They divorced in 1964.
