Born Alain Édouard Kienast on May 27, 1944, in Casablanca, Morocco, Souchon's family relocated to France when he was just six months old. His mother's Swiss roots granted him dual French-Swiss nationality. After his father's untimely death in an accident when Souchon was 15, his mother sent him to a French high school in England. However, he encountered registration issues and decided to stay in London, working various jobs to make ends meet.
Upon returning to France, Souchon discovered his passion for music, largely influenced by English and American artists. He began playing the guitar, and his unique blend of folk, rock, and French chanson styles eventually emerged. Souchon's early performances in Parisian cabarets and bars on the Rive Gauche helped him hone his craft.
In 1971, Souchon signed with the Pathe-Marconi label, but initial success eluded him. It wasn't until he collaborated with composer and arranger Laurent Voulzy, with whom he wrote songs, that his career took off. Souchon's breakthrough came with the hit single "J'ai 10 ans" (1974), followed by a string of successful albums.
In the 1980s, Souchon ventured into acting, starring in films like "Lt. Meurtrier" (1983) and "Love on the Run" (1979), for which he wrote the theme song. His music continued to flourish, with the album "On avance" (1984) and his transition to Virgin Records in 1989. The latter marked a significant milestone, with "La beauté de Ava Gardner" being voted the best title of the year by the Victoires de la Musique.
Souchon's biggest hit, "Foule sentimentale," came in 1993 with the million-selling album "C'est déjà ça." He received the award for best Chanson Originale at the 20th anniversary of the Victoires de la Musique in 1995. Throughout his career, Souchon has earned numerous awards and accolades, solidifying his position as a French music legend.
