Born on December 21, 1943, in Lingen, Herefordshire, Lee grew up in Blackheath, London, as part of a Romani family. His father, a musician, introduced him to music at a young age, and Lee began studying piano at the age of seven.
Lee's early influences include Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis, and he took up the guitar in 1958. He traded in his first guitar, a second-hand Höfner President, for a Czechoslovak Jolana Grazioso, which later became the forerunner of the Futurama.
Lee left school at 16 to pursue a full-time music career, playing with various bands from 1959 onwards. He accompanied Richard Kneller and Dickie Pride, and was spotted by Russ Conway, who introduced him to Larry Parnes.
Lee's breakthrough came as the lead guitarist with Chris Farlowe and the Thunderbirds, playing a mix of R&B, country, and rock and roll. However, he left the band in 1968 to focus on country music.
