A flamboyant and theatrical rocker who blended glam, rock, and soul to create a unique sound, known for his energetic live performances and hit songs like "Delilah".
Alex Harvey is best known as the dynamic frontman of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, a group that electrified the glam rock scene of the 1970s with their energetic live performances. As the leader of this iconic band, Harvey built a reputation for his outrageous costumes, acrobatic stage antics, and soulful vocals.
Born Alexander James Harvey on February 5, 1935, in the working-class Kinning Park district of Glasgow, Scotland, Harvey grew up with a passion for music. He began performing in skiffle groups in 1954, eventually leading his own Big Beat Band, which opened for the Beatles on their 1960 Scottish tour.
Harvey's musical roots were firmly planted in Dixieland jazz and skiffle music, which enjoyed immense popularity in Britain during the late 1950s. As the leader of Alex Harvey's Big Soul Band (1958-1965), he played blues and rock and roll songs, touring extensively in the UK and Germany. He even won a competition to find Scotland's answer to Tommy Steele, a British rock and roll pioneer.
After a brief, unsuccessful solo career, Harvey found his calling as a member of the pit band in the London stage production of the musical Hair. This experience led to the formation of Rock Workshop with Ray Russell in 1970, producing the self-titled album Rock Workshop, featuring Harvey originals and other songs not from the stage show.
In 1972, Harvey formed the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, a group that would propel him to fame with their energetic live performances and eclectic blend of rock, blues, and glam. The band's albums, such as Framed (1972), Next... (1973), and The Impossible Dream (1974), received critical acclaim and commercial success.
Alex Harvey's contribution to Scottish rock cannot be overstated. He inspired a generation of musicians, including the likes of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band's guitarist, Zal Cleminson, who went on to form the band Tear Gas. Harvey's flamboyant stage presence, soulful vocals, and genre-bending music continue to influence rock musicians to this day.
"I'm not a musician, I'm a performer. I'm a showman, an entertainer. I'm a bit of a show-off, really."
