As a young Austrian goalkeeper, Alex Manninger rose to international fame with his exceptional skills between the posts. With 33 appearances for the Austria national team, including a stint at UEFA Euro 2008, Manninger's impressive career spanned across top-tier clubs in Italy, Germany, Austria, and England.

Early Days and Rise to Prominence

Manninger's journey began as a youth player for SV Austria Salzburg in 1993. He was promoted to the first-team squad at the start of the 1995-1996 season, making his debut and lone appearance of the season. A loan spell at SK Vorwärts Steyr followed, where he played his first top-level game against Grazer AK.

Austria to England: A Transfer to Remember

In the 1996-1997 season, Manninger signed for Grazer AK, making his debut in place of the unfit first-choice keeper in the autumn UEFA Cup second-round game against Internazionale Milano at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in Milan. He made 24 appearances in his lone season with Grazer AK before a high-profile transfer to Arsenal in the Premier League.

Arsenal and the Premier League

At Arsenal, Manninger was understudy to the experienced David Seaman. However, when Seaman was injured during the 1997-1998 season, Manninger covered for him, enjoying a spell of six clean sheets in a row in the league, a joint club record. The last of these was against Manchester United at Old Trafford, where Arsenal won 1-0. In March 1998, he was named Premier League Player of the Month.

Although Manninger had to make way for Seaman once the Englishman returned from injury, he had already made a significant contribution to Arsenal's title win. Despite only having played 7 games in the 1997-1998 FA Premier League season, Manninger was granted special dispensation for a winners' medal.

Manninger went on to represent football clubs in Italy, Germany, Austria, and England, including stints at Fiorentina and Espanyol. He retired from professional football in 2013, leaving behind a legacy as one of Austria's most accomplished goalkeepers.
