Alex Joseph Jean Tanguay was born on November 21, 1979, in Quebec, Canada. He began his hockey career at a young age, playing in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a minor ice hockey team from Beauce, Quebec. Tanguay later joined the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) for the 1996-1997 season, where he scored 27 goals and 68 points in 70 games.
Tanguay was selected 12th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. He began his NHL career with Colorado in 1999 and quickly established himself as a skilled playmaker. In his rookie season, Tanguay was nominated for the Calder Memorial Trophy and went on to win the Stanley Cup with Colorado in 2001, scoring two goals in Game 7 against the New Jersey Devils.
