Born on December 21, 1920, in Havana, Cuba, Alonso was the fourth child of Antonio Martínez Arredondo, a lieutenant veterinarian, and Ernestina del Hoyo y Lugo, a dressmaker. Her love affair with dance began at a young age, and by 1931, she was studying ballet at Sociedad Pro-Arte Musical in Havana under the tutelage of Nikolai Yavorsky.
Alonso's professional debut came in 1932, at the tender age of 11, and by 1937, she had married her fellow ballet student, Fernando Alonso. Together, they moved to New York City, where she continued her training at the School of American Ballet. Her debut in the United States came in 1938, with performances in the musical comedies Great Lady and Stars In Your Eyes.
In 1941, Alonso was diagnosed with a detached retina, which led to a series of operations and a prolonged period of bed rest. Despite this setback, she persevered, adapting her technique to compensate for her partial blindness. Her partners had to be precisely placed on stage, and she used lights to guide herself, showcasing her remarkable ability to overcome adversity.
In 1955, Alonso co-founded the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, which became a testament to her dedication to promoting ballet in her homeland. Under her artistic direction, the company flourished, and she continued to choreograph and perform, cementing her status as a prima ballerina assoluta.
