Allan Simonsen, a Danish racing driver, is best known for his impressive career in sports car racing, particularly in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as his accomplishments in Australian motorsport.
Born on July 5, 1978, in Odense, Denmark, Simonsen began his racing career in karting, competing against future Formula One World Champion Kimi Räikkönen.
In 1999, he transitioned to car racing, winning the Danish Formula Ford Championship. He then moved on to Formula Palmer Audi in 2000, followed by German Formula 3 and Formula Renault 2.0 UK in 2001.
Simonsen's career took a significant turn in 2002 when he shifted his focus to sports car racing, driving a Ferrari 360 for Veloqx Motorsport in the British GT Championship.
In 2003, he moved to Australia, where he achieved remarkable success, finishing 8th in the Australian Nations Cup Championship and 2nd in Group 2. He also participated in the Bathurst 24 Hour, finishing 8th driving a Lamborghini Diablo GTR.
Throughout his career in Australia, Simonsen drove in various events, including the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercar events. His best Bathurst result came in 2011, when he finished third for Kelly Racing, driving alongside Greg Murphy in a Holden VE Commodore.
Simonsen's achievements in Australia were further solidified when he won the Australian GT Championship in 2007, driving both a Ferrari 360 GT and a Ferrari F430. He finished second in 2008, driving a Ferrari F430 GT.
In 2011, he set a blistering time of 204.95 around the famous Mount Panorama circuit at the Sprint Bathurst event, a monumental effort that was initially questioned by officials but later confirmed.
Simonsen's life was tragically cut short on June 22, 2013, when he died in a crash during the third lap of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. His legacy, however, continues to inspire and motivate motorsport enthusiasts around the world.
