Born on September 24, 1949, in Sorengo, Switzerland, to Swedish parents, Arborelius grew up in Lund, Scania, where he was raised as a Lutheran. However, he felt a deep longing for a life of prayer and silent adoration, which ultimately led him to convert to Catholicism at the age of 20.
His conversion was a turning point in his life, and he credits the Catholic faith with giving him truth. He was particularly inspired by Saint Thérèse of Lisieux's autobiography, "The Story of a Soul", which led him to desire a life as a Discalced Carmelite.
In 1971, Arborelius entered the Carmelite order at the Norraby monastery in Southern Sweden, where he took his perpetual vows in Bruges, Belgium, in 1977. He went on to obtain his degree in philosophy and theology, as well as studying modern languages at Lund University.
His academic pursuits culminated in earning a doctoral degree at the Pontifical Theological Faculty Teresianum in Rome, after which he was ordained as a priest in Malmö on September 8, 1979.
On November 17, 1998, Pope John Paul II appointed Arborelius Bishop of Stockholm, and he was consecrated on December 29, 1998, by Bishop Hubert Brandenburg. As the first ethnic Swedish Bishop since the Protestant Reformation, he became a significant figure in the Catholic Church in Sweden.
Under his leadership, the Diocese of Stockholm has flourished, and he has worked tirelessly to promote Catholicism in Sweden, while also engaging in interfaith dialogue with other Christian denominations and religions.
