Lead vocalist of German power metal band Helloween, known for his powerful and distinctive voice, as well as songwriting skills.
Andi Deris is a German singer, renowned for his iconic vocals as one of the three co-lead vocalists of the power metal band Helloween, and as the co-founder and former lead singer of the metal band Pink Cream 69.
Deris possesses a remarkable high baritone-type voice, boasting an almost 4-octave vocal range. His singing style is characterized by a unique blend of melodic and aggressive vocals, always using the voice mix.
Born on August 18, 1964, in Karlsruhe, Germany, Deris began his musical journey at the tender age of 15, singing in his first band, Paranoid. Two years later, the band's name was changed to Nameless, where he collaborated with his school friend and drummer, Ralf Maurer.
In 1984, Deris joined Dragon, a band featuring the Di Blasio brothers on guitar, Bernd and Stefan Lüdde on bass and drums, respectively. The band recorded their first demo at Edo Zanki's studio in Karlsdorf and Arco Studio in Munich, working with producer Tony Monn. The demo featured songs like "I Was Made to Be With You," "Call Me Up," and "Woman."
In 1986, Deris, along with the Di Blasio brothers, met Italian bass player Daniel De Niro, marking the birth of Kymera. Ralf Maurer, alias Ralph Mason, rejoined the band as the drummer. Soon after, Kymera recorded new songs for Francis, Day and Hunter GmbH Publishing, including "Hello U.S.A.," "Hot Looking Romeo," and rearranged versions of earlier tracks.
After a string of concerts, Maurer quit Kymera to pursue university studies, and Kosta Zafiriou took over as the new drummer. The band eventually transformed into Pink Cream 69, with Deris as the lead vocalist. The band's early success led to Deris being approached by Helloween in 1994, marking the beginning of his iconic tenure with the power metal legends.
As a member of Helloween, Deris has contributed to several critically acclaimed albums, including "Master of the Rings" (1994), "Time of the Oath" (1996), and "Better Than Raw" (1998). His powerful vocals have been instrumental in shaping the band's distinctive sound, earning them a loyal global fan base.
Deris' work with Helloween has been recognized with several awards and nominations, including the "Best Metal Album" award at the 1996 German Music Awards for "Time of the Oath."
Beyond his remarkable musical achievements, Deris is known for his humble and down-to-earth personality. His influence on the power metal genre is undeniable, inspiring a new generation of metal vocalists. With a career spanning over four decades, Andi Deris remains an iconic figure in the world of heavy metal music.
