Kai Hansen, a German musician born on January 17, 1963, is renowned for being the founder, lead guitarist, and vocalist of the power metal band Gamma Ray. He is also one of the co-founders of another iconic power metal band, Helloween, which he was a part of from 1983 to 1989 and rejoined in 2016.
Born in Hamburg, Germany, Hansen developed an interest in music at the tender age of 10, starting with washdrums. However, his parents, tired of the noise, introduced him to the acoustic guitar, and he took a six-month course in classical guitar. Following this, he formed his first band with his classmates, and later bought an electric guitar, a white Ibanez Les Paul.
Hansen's musical career began in 1978 with a band called Gentry, alongside Iron Savior's co-founder and producer Piet Sielck. In 1983, he and Michael Weikath founded Helloween, where he played the role of guitarist and singer until Michael Kiske took over the microphone for the albums Keeper of the Seven Keys Part I and Keeper of the Seven Keys Part II. After leaving Helloween in 1989, Hansen went on to form his own power metal band, Gamma Ray.
Hansen has also made notable appearances as a guest vocalist on Blind Guardian's albums Follow the Blind and Tales from the Twilight World. Additionally, he joined Iron Savior as a guitarist in 1997 but quit after a few years to focus on Gamma Ray.
