Born on August 16, 1935, in the refugee slum of Petralona, Stamatiadis grew up in a poor family with an Asia Minor refugee father and a mother from Mani. His childhood was marked by the German Occupation and its aftermath, but he found solace in playing football in the neighborhood playgrounds.
Stamatiadis started playing football at AE Melandias and later signed with Sparta Petralona in 1950. However, a technicality led to his card being cancelled, and his father, Dimitris, and coach Sertsikas took him for a trial to AEK Athens' infrastructure departments in Nea Filadelfeia. The coach of the men's team, Jack Beby, recognized Stamatiadis' talent and potential, and with his guidance, Stamatiadis developed into a skilled left winger, earning the nickname "The Arrow Greek".
After retiring as a player, Stamatiadis transitioned into management, taking the reins at AEK Athens in 1975. He led the team to a Greek Cup victory in 1978 and managed the club for three seasons.
