Early Life and Club Career

Born on September 7, 1965, in Rödersdorf, East Germany, Thom's love for football began at a young age. He joined the youth department of BFC Dynamo in 1974 and enrolled in the elite Children and Youth Sports school KJS Werner Seelenbinder in Alt-Hohenschönhausen, Berlin. In 1987, Thom began pursuing a sports teacher degree at the German University of Physical Culture DHFK in Leipzig.

Rise to Prominence

At 18, Thom made his professional debut for BFC Dynamo in the DDR-Oberliga, substituting for Bernd Schulz in a match against FC Carl Zeiss Jena on October 22, 1983. He soon made his international debut for BFC Dynamo against FK Partizan Belgrade in the 1983-1984 European Cup. During his time at BFC Dynamo, Thom won the DDR-Oberliga in 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1988, as well as the FDGB-Pokal in 1988 and 1989. He scored the winning goal in the 1989 FDGB-Pokal final and was the top scorer in the 1987-1988 DDR-Oberliga.

Awards and Accolades

Thom's outstanding performances earned him numerous accolades, including being voted the East German Footballer of the Year in 1988. He was also named player of the week six times during the league season.

Transfer to Bayer Leverkusen

On December 16, 1989, Thom became the first East German to sign with a Bundesliga club, joining Bayer Leverkusen for a transfer fee of 2.5 million Deutsche Mark (approximately 900,000). This transfer made Thom one of the highest-paid players in the league.
